» Google developing a translator for smartphones |
Feb 09, 2010 - 8:39 AM - by Mac Daddy

Head of translation services at Google, Franz Och, said he believed almost instant speech-to-speech translation should be possible if the accuracy of voice recognition and machine translation can be improved. He said Google is working on this, and he expected the technology to “work reasonably well” in a few years. There has been a great deal of progress in voice recognition and machine translation in recent years, especially the latter, thanks to funding from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

Feb 09, 2010 - 8:19 AM - by Mac Daddy
Cryptic Studios' latest MMO Star Trek Online outsold all other PC games in the UK for week ending 6 February, according to the latest sales charts.
STO entered the charts at pole position, pushing Mass Effect 2 down to number three, while Football Manager 2010 retained its number two spot. STALKER: Call of Pripyat entered at number four.
Last week, Cryptic announced that one million accounts had been made on the official sites for STO and its other MMO, Champions Online. However, Cryptic has been struggling to cope with all the STO players attempting to gain access to the game's servers. This weekend the company had to expand the server capacity to allow more players online consecutively.

» Microsoft, Google split over browser bug bounty |
Feb 09, 2010 - 8:13 AM - by Mac Daddy
To entice security researchers to look for holes in the Chrome browser, Google has announced it will pay $500 for bugs found in the code. But several experts say that's not enough money to motivate skilled vulnerability researchers.
"I think it's ridiculous," Charlie Miller, a senior security researcher at Independent Security Evaluators, said when asked Monday for his opinion of Google's new bug bounty program. "It's insulting. It's so low."
Under Google's new "experimental" incentive program announced last week people will get paid $500 for select interesting and original security vulnerabilities discovered in Chrome, or $1,337 for particularly severe or clever bugs. That figure refers to the geek term for elite, or "leet," which can be spelled out using the numbers.

» Powercolor HD 5870 PCS+ Review |
Feb 09, 2010 - 8:08 AM - by Mac Daddy
Last year AMD released their new Radeon HD 5800 Series of graphics cards which quickly became a big success due to the numerous improvements made over previous generations. Up to now all cards available from all manufacturers were reference design cards which means they were all made to the same specifications, using the same components and then a sticker was added on the cooler depending on the AIB.
Now Powercolor is one of the first AIBs to release a custom designed HD 5870 card that uses both a non-reference cooler and a non-reference PCB design. While this allows for considerable production optimizations and reduce manufacturing cost it also introduces the risk that the product might not work as optimally as intended by AMD.
